We were there about three months before we had a bath. There was no encouragement to stand out in the cold and wash yourself down so we were not the cleanest of people but that applied to everyone. There were no facilities for having a bath back at command post either. I only got a bath because I drew my own name out of a hat for two days leave at a leave camp at Inchon, so I spent most of that leave in the shower! I don’t think I ever washed any of my clothes. We just didn’t take much off, you took the parkas off but nothing else. We’d sleep in our clothes for two reasons, one was that you didn’t know what was going to happen next as you were always on a semi-alert and secondly because it kept you warm. The front line was never quiet, there was always fire going one way or the other, and it was rarely dark because the Commonwealth Division continually put up star shells to illuminate no-man’s-land. It was a strange environment. It was even too cold for rats or any other animals, nothing moved except us. I’m sure there was lots of wildlife in the summer, but they either hibernated in the winter or froze to death. I stayed there for about five months into the summer when it got appreciably warmer. We then dispensed of the winter clothing.
